Welcome

When the school opened in September 1986 it was founded on the principles of teachers working together as a strong, committed and dedicated team, working with parents and giving quality experiences to all our children.

Our emphasis is on the individual child, i.e. each child's welfare and learning is important to all who work within the school. The present headteacher and staff have continued to uphold the caring and 'family type' of ethos, which has become well known as a major part of our school.

What makes our school special?

Our school is made special through the collaboration of our highly dedicated and committed teaching staff who use each other's strengths to the benefit of all children across the school.

Child Protection

At Chapel Break the welfare of the child is paramount. There is an ethos where our pupils feel secure, are encouraged to talk, are listened to and are safe.  We will take all possible steps to safeguard our children and to ensure that the adults in our school are safe to work with our children and have undertaken CRB checks.

Child Protection Policy

Attendance

We have to improve our attendance. The Local Authority will fast track to court, any parent whose child has less than 85% attendance (unless the child has a health care plan or exceptional circumstances). Children with less than 94% attendance will be put on an educationally vulnerable register and their attendance monitored.

The TARDIS opened in September 2007 after many years developing thinking skills within the curriculum and the championing of the arts as a vehicle for deepening learning. Inspired, in part, by the work of Room 13 in Scotland, the TARDIS operates as a creative space as part of the curriculum, beyond the curriculum and through their own choice, usually working on a series of ideas for up to 3 days at a time.

This continuation of time provides opportunity for children to extend their thinking through creative conversations and engage in often philosophical dialogue; this in turn leads to a visual outcome. Ideas trails are initiated by the children, occasionally this is a continuation of classroom learning, often after an exploration of an abstract or imaginative idea and regularly from the spontaneous questions and ideas the children bring to the forum or 'ideas party'.

Art skills and techniques are developed as necessary and by the children's request. There is much space for experimentation with media, collaboration and playfulness!

For the third year we have been invited to exhibit work at the Norwich Arts Centre.

Skills based curriculum

As a staff we spent time creating a skills based curriculum, which has allowed us to teach the skills required in a progressive way, whilst giving flexibility to be creative in how we teach them.

Challenge Award

The school first achieved Challenge Award Status in November 2006 and then again in March 2011. This involved a rigorous assessment conducted by N.A.C.E., of all the school's provision for Gifted and Talented pupils. The school is only the 16th to be reaccredited. Philosophy

Philosophy and creative thinking is taught throughout the school, starting in Reception. We encourage parents to take an active part in their child's philosophy homework and have had fantastic support and interest from them. The staff at Chapel Break have found that philosophy has a big impact on the children's learning and behaviour. It improves their abilities to organize questioning, reasoning and thinking skills. We believe that philosophical enquiry is a highly valuable tool that helps the children clarify and express their thoughts and ideas, as well as teaching them to respect the view points of others.

Race equality

At Chapel Break we deliver a culturally diverse curriculum. Our policy is to create a positive inclusive atmosphere with equality for all. We are committed to challenging and preventing racism and discrimination in any form, whether this is direct, indirect or by omission.

Allotment

The school has an allotment. All the children spend time in the garden and have been able to plant, grow and harvest fruit and vegetables from the school grounds. A club runs one lunch time.

School council

School council gives the children a voice within the school. They meet each week and class representatives bring any suggestions, comments or concerns that have arisen during class councils. Each term the school elects a chair and vice chair from Year 2 to run the council meetings. They raise money for school and charity. School council is also responsible for promoting Energy busting within school.

Clubs

Various clubs happen at different times of year. Some examples are:

Choir has been very well attended and is a delight to listen to, as the melodic singing drifts down the corridors. They have performed for parents at the end of terms. They take part in the Norwich Music Festival. Children from the junior school come back to attend.

Handbells club has musical members.

Taiko drummimg has very rhythmic participants.

Cooking club has well fed cooks.

TARDIS club has many artists.

Gardening club at lunch time.

Multiskills club is run by Coach Tom after school.

Drama club has very enthusiastic members. It is also run by Coach Tom after school.

Tea-time readers are from Year 2. Children are offered 3 sessions a week for half a term to improve their reading skills.
